About Brother Harper

Brother Tamir Harper is a native Philadelphian and a graduate of the School District of Philadelphia. Throughout his teenage years, he was an advocate for public school education. He currently attends the American University, in Washington D.C., as a part of the awarding-winning Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars program, a full-ride merit scholarship program. Brother Harper dreams to one day become the Superintendent of Philadelphia Public Schools. 

At the age of 16 Brother Harper, co-founded UrbEd Inc., an education advocacy 501c3 that advocates for an equitable and quality education. He currently serves as the executive director of UrbEd and has successfully raised over $100,000 during his tenure.  

Since being initiated in Fall 2019 in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. he has worked to served the fraternity to the best of his ability. He serves as Vice President of the Nu Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., the VI assistant area director, and the co-chair for the MAAC education committee. Serving the brotherhood has been an honor and he looks forward to continuing to serve.

On-campus Brother Harper is active, he serves as one of the Chairs of the President’s Council on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the Editor-In-Chief of The Blackprint, the only for people of color student media publication on campus, and as a peer facilitator for freshman general education courses. Harper also serves as the Vice President for Intercultural Greek Collective and as the Co-President for Educators Rising, an education prep club on campus.  

While in DC he never forgets home. Brother Harper continues to work for Democratic Chair of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives J. McClinton (D-PA191) and collaborate with the School District of Philadelphia. This election cycle he has served as a digital strategist for Dr. Nina Ahmad, Pennsylvania’s candidate for Auditor General, who will make history as the first woman of color to hold an executive position in PA. 

Leadership and advocacy is nothing new for Brother Harper. He previously served on Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Violence Prevention Board of Directors and as a city of Philadelphia Youth Commissioner. His advocacy and fight against injustices has been featured in TIMES magazine, The Washington Post, PBS News Hour, NBC News and The Philadelphia Inquirer
